Hope ium
Hope ium

Well, another word has nestled itself into the conversation — one that carries this particular, wake-you-up quality: Hopeium. A blend of hope and some metallic-sounding suffix, -ium. Hope is metallic? No. Hope is magnetic.

The word Hopeium gets tossed around freely in the financial world — that realm where money wields the greatest influence over events.

Where fortunes are made and livelihoods are destroyed.
Financially speaking, of course.

People accused of Hopeium are seen as unrealistic, and therefore dangerous, when it comes to financial decisions.
Fair enough, when the facts and the general read of a situation suggest that an investment is headed for ruin.
So far, so realistic.
And yet — still accompanied by assumption.
Because knowledge, more often than not, only shows up after the fact.

So what does it take to strip Hopeium of its menace and its risk?

In financial investing, the investor typically starts with an assessment — their own or someone else's.
That usually begins with gathering evidence and data to analyse market conditions.
So far, so methodical.
The result can land anywhere from encouraging to grim.

But what does Hopeium do in a career context?
When young people picture a path that aligns with their abilities — and above all, their passion — is Hopeium already at play?
Right, realism gets a seat at the table too.

Speaking of playing.

How dramatically does Hopeium affect relationships?
Oh, Hopeium-heavy relationships are stuffed to the brim with disappointments and unmet expectations.
Especially in the early flush of falling in love, sober reality is decidedly unwelcome.

Oh la la — it really does seem like a precarious business, being in the grip of Hopium.
Or even just being fond of it.

So should we abandon hope entirely, then?
What do we get in return?
Realism and pessimism?
No, thank you very much.

I'd like to get a word in here — or two.

What if, when approaching a project, an event, or a relationship, Hopeium is precisely what fires the starting gun?
Because whoever shows up with hope is looking for possibilities, for chances, for things that have never been tried before — and in doing so, opens doors that didn't exist a moment ago.

That doesn't rule out examining those doors more closely, having a good look around, and where appropriate, making a proper assessment.

Too complicated?

Sorry — I need to take a quick look back.
If I'd run every one of my past projects through the realism machine first, most of them would never have happened.
Especially the ideas and ventures that stepped into genuinely new territory.

I think of the early days of the internet, the death of vinyl LPs, the shift in how people shop, the constant hunger for new experiences — and the markets that followed.

Oh yes, Hopeium was and remains enormously useful when it comes to embracing something new.

And what better time for that than right here, right now?

We are in serious trouble — the kind that history offers few comparisons for.

Tech billionaires armed with AI are taking over long-standing structures and reshaping them entirely.
And not in favour of ordinary citizens like you and me.

Hopeium?

Oh yes — now more than ever.

Because we need new doors, new perspectives, and we need them now.
The opposite of Hopium would be what, exactly?
Ah yes, I remember.

Pessimism and giving up. Not my world.
